Harley Brown (b. 1939)
Harley, hailing from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, is known for his unique representations of Native Americans. “I´ve painted Natives of North America since the late fifties and have had the good fortune to live near numerous tribal bands in Alberta and Montana. My love in art is painting people and especially the great individuals of the West from Mexico to the United States to the northern reaches of Canada. I´ve just been naturally enthralled with the vast history of the Old West and the people who created the wonders of our great civilization.”
In addition to the Cowboy Artists of America, Harley is also a member of the Northwest Rendezvous in Montana, the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City and the Autry Museum in Los Angeles. His art appears in numerous private and public art collections, and he has commissioned portraits of President Ronald Reagan for his second inauguration, Winston Churchill, Sophia Loren and others. He has also painted numerous personalities for magazine covers.
Harley has published two books: Harley Brown's Eternal Truths for Every Artist and Confessions of a Starving Artist. He writes a regular column for International Artist Magazine and taught painting workshops periodically throughout the world from 1980 through 1999. Harley attended the Alberta College of Art in Calgary and the Camberwell School of Art in London, where he lived for two years in the 1960s.
“I´m now living with my wife, Carol, on an acreage in Tucson, Arizona. We have five children, ten grand children and two great grand children. We're lucky to be nestled with a multitude of friends here, many of whom are fellow artists. We travel, dine and laugh our way through the days where we all consider ourselves so fortunate to be doing what we love and living in this extraordinary country.
To be a member of the CAA is almost an answer to a dream. The purpose of this unique organization is everything I stand for. The membership has artists who are amongst the greatest in world history, which “believe me“ is a humbling experience. The spirit, drive and talent of the artists keeps us all spurred with inspiration. I couldn't be happier in my life knowing that a good part of my years will be spent with such remarkable artists and individuals.”
